The wonderful Away with the Fairies in Hogsback is owned and run by a mad Englishman who came backpacking and never left. Set on two huge properties it overlooks the mystical peaks of the Hogsback Mountains and Auckland Nature Reserve and has one of the best views in South Africa from the cliff at the bottom of the garden. There’s also a bathtub perched on the self-same cliff edge - yikes!

Lounge around revelling in the breath-taking views of the oldest forest in South Africa or cool off in the pool after exploring the magical forest and its abundance of beautiful waterfalls.

Hogsback’s main hiking trails start at the viewpoint so there are no excuses for not bumping into a forest fairy or two. In fact, it’s said that, as a child, JRR Tolkien was inspired by the magic of the area and that he based his fantasy world of The Lord of the Rings on it. Legend has it that Smaug, the dragon in The Hobbit, lives in the bowels of one of the Hogsback Mountains.

Hogsback is one of South Africa’s premier mountain biking destinations, so try a mountain bike/abseil down a waterfall/hike through the forest combo tour.

Rub away any ensuing aches and pains with a massage or a steaming hot bath in the cliff-edge bathtub - just don’t fall off the edge of the earth when you get out!

And hey! There’s no need to cook. Just tuck into scrum-diddley-umptious breakfasts, snacks and the best backpacker pizzas in the world. Yum Yum.

A psychic living on the property gives readings in a one-on-one sessions that are full of love and guidance. She also offers massage, Reiki and past life reconnection.

It’s located in a fairy place. The landscape is fantastic. The staff is very kind and helpful. I didn’t try the food they served but it looked delicious. The showers and toilets were clean.
However, I didn’t like the kitchen and the living room. It lacked most kitchen stuff and although there were ladies cleaning it , it didn’t appear to be so and it was quite smelly. The couches in the living room were old and torn. The dorms were ok but the only day I was there, there was an awful smell.
