The Midlands has famously become known as the "Midlands Meander".

The Midlands is situated only an one-hour drive from Durban and four and a half hours from Joburg.

It was in the "Midlands" that Madiba was captured. On the 5th August 1962, just outside of Howick, police flagged down a car in which Nelson Mandela was pretending to be a chauffeur. He had been on the run for 17 months, and had just been visiting Albert Luthuli’s home to request support in calling for an armed struggle. It was here that he was captured and arrested.Which led to his 27 years in jail.

The Umgeni river flows through this beautiful part of KZN and forms the Midmar dam, where annually the Midmar mile is swam by thousands. When the Midmar mile is not on, the dam is a hive of water sports.

Howick Falls can be found in the quaint town of Howick. The falls are 95 meters high and form part of the Umgeni river. In Zulu the falls are known as KwaNogqaza, which means "Place of the Tall One".

And then of course the famous Nottingham road where one can find artists, artisans, fly fishing and lots of beer.

This region really is worth stopping off for a few days.
