Founded after the discovery of gold in 1883, Barberton had two stock exchanges and many speculators, scoundrels and fortune seekers. It also had more bars and saloons than houses!

The town's most famous citizen was Cockney Liz, who auctioned herself to the highest bidder every night while strutting her stuff on the billiard table. Payment was in gold nuggets.

The town offers a little something for everyone. Backpackers can enjoy the Heritage Walks around  town and a number of hiking trails in the hills behind, twitchers and try to spot a Purple Crested, Knysna Turaco, and Narina Trogon or simply relax in the gentle serenity of the area. For budget travellers looking for something a little wilder, explore the area on a mountain-bike or 4x4, visit half a dozen nature and wildlife reserves nearby or venture further out to the Kruger National Park.
