Surrounded by rolling hills and on the banks of the enormous Hartbeespoort dam, this small town is a good stopover for a night or two. With the huge number of animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres in the area, backpackers may find they need a few more than two days.

Water sports galore are great entertainment and there’s a huge craft market that will delight curio shop-aholics. For budget travellers looking for some wild life, visit the De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary for a good opportunity to come face to face with one of these beautiful beasts, learn a little at The bush Babies Monkey sanctuary, one of several sanctuaries in a group of sanctuaries, including the elephant sanctuary that provides for orphaned and abused animals.

Get up high with Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort and experience panoramic views of the beautiful Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounding areas, as well as excellent recreational and educational facilities.

Backpackers can enjoy all sorts of water sports including para-sailing, windsurfing, water and jet skiing. For the more adventurous the Dam offers para-gliding, hang-gliding or hot air ballooning.

There is also an aquarium, private zoo, a snake park, scenic drives, challenging hikes, the Crocodile Ramble, an arts and crafts route, and the Pilanesberg National Park and Madikwe Game Reserve in the north.
