Known as the whale nursery of South Africa, this tranquil little village is a safe haven for whale families, birds and travellers. With up to 124 whales a day in the bay (of which 82 were calves born here last season), Witsand is deservedly known as “The Whale Nursery” of South Africa. The annual population growth is estimated at 7%.

Once a busy river port serving the farmlands of the Overberg, these days it’s a great place to go fishing, hiking and exploring nature.

So drop your socks and get paddling in the widest river mouth around or haul out your kite board and hit the estuary.

Witsand is a 3.5 hours drive from Cape Town and 2 hours from George.
