Port Edward is a small coastal village with delicious beaches, scrumptiously warm water, tempting arts and crafts, curious whales and dolphins and miles of hiking and horse trails.

This small coastal village is bracketed by warm water beaches and miles of exquisite hiking and horse trails.
Bordered by the dramatic Umtamvuna River gorge, Port Edward is the southernmost town on the South Coast.

The main attractions for budget backpackers include the golden beaches, coffee estates, restaurants, arts and craft shops, several adventure sports and the nearby Wild Coast Sun Casino. Other places of interest include the Red Desert, the Space Centre and the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve - a sub-tropical jungle full of botanical surprises and a staggering 259 bird species (which is half of Natal’s bird population).

The Boboyi River wends its way seawards through a nature reserve to meet the sea near Leisure Bay. A golden stretch of beach and a series of sheltered coves make Leisure Bay a beach holiday spot par excellence.

If you were blindfolded and dropped off at Port Edward’s Red Desert - the world’s smallest desert - you’d swear you’d landed on Mars.

Check out the annual sardine run. A natural phenomenon that occurs in June/July and has to be seen to be believed.

Experience local culture, eat a Xhosa lunch, consult a sangoma, or just enjoy the warm hospitality on offer from Ku-Boyoyi Backpackers Lodge.
