East London has the largest river port in the country and is a popular surf stop for backpackers.

Budget travellers wanting some history, can check out the East London Museum’s Coelacanth - ancestor to amphibians that in turn became land vertebrates (that’s you and me). It was believed to have been extinct for over 70 million years until one was caught by a local fishing trawler! The museum also has one of the world’s few dodo eggs.

The cultural heritage of East London is evident in the well-preserved examples of 19th century architecture, the Amatole and Maluti mountains' rock art. In fact, and the fossilised footprints at Bat's Cave in Nahoon.

The Buffalo City region has much to attract the sporting and outdoor enthusiast and various tour operators offer a range of activities which include helicopter rides, surf lessons, township tours and yacht trips across the bay. The Big Four can be found in Inkwenkwezi Game Reserve which is just half an hour’s drive away.

There is also a wide variety of eco-walks and hiking trails that take in both the coastal areas as well as the indigenous forests.

Budget travellers are spoilt for choice with a number of places offering backpackers accommodation. Chose the conveniently located Buffalo Backpackers, the bright and zany Niki-Nana Backpackers, .the eco-friendly, self-sustainabe and friendly Santa Paloma Backpackers or the ideally situated beach hangout that is Sugarshack Backpackers.
