St Francis Bay, located midway between Port Elizabeth and Knysna, offers a fabulous escape from the pressures of daily life in a haven of peace and tranquility. Once you experience this lifestyle, it becomes a precious memory to cherish forever. But it is most popular with backpackers for being home of many a surf legend, including the movie Endless Summer.

Just on the outskirts of Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay offers budget travellers a host of things to do. The Kromme River is navigable for 10km upstream, and is linked to the St Francis canals system, whales can be spotted in the Bay from May to late October and dolphins can be seen daily. See if you can spot the Cape clawless otter,. ever present, frolicking in the waves and rock pools. Bird watchers should be on the lookout for the rare African Oystercatcher and Fish Eagle.

Popular for surfing is Seal Point, with a beautiful stretch of beach and the historic lighthouse, built in 1878. Walking trails wind along the rocky coast and through the Irma Booysen Floral Reserve.

Raggies Backpackers is located in the centre of St Francis Bay, has a pub and restaurant and is a mere 200m away from the beach.
