BEAUFORT WEST

Welcome to the heart of the Cape Karoo and the largest town in the arid Great Karoo region.
Professor Christiaan Barnard, a former resident, performed the world’s first successful human-to-human heart transplant, and is honoured in the local museum which houses a display of awards presented to him and a replica of the original heart transplant theatre.

The lovely Karoo National Park lies next to Beaufort West. Pull in, settle back and let the big horizons of the Karoo inspire you.

Beaufort West saw the largest migrations of mammals ever on record. In 1849, Sir John Fraser observed and documented a herd of Springbok that took three days to pass the town. Imagine that!

GOLDEN OLDIES!

The old Town Hall and the Dutch Reformed Church have been declared national monuments.
