Overlooking ivory sands and backed by green hills that swoop down to a sparkling sea, Blulungula offers budget travellers the opportunity to experience a slice of African paradise.

Women paint their faces with clay to block out the sun, make bricks, stamp maize for the evening meal, prepare traditional food, brew beer and collect firewood. Men make their own fishing rods from wood and wire, catch fish with throw nets, and crayfish and octopus by hand. Kids herd the cattle, chase the chickens, look after their younger siblings and play Follow the Backpacker.

This jewel of a village, cut off from the outside world by forests, rivers and the ocean seeks to challenge backpackers to escape their preconceptions and open their eyes, mind and soul.

The eco-friendly Bulungula Backpackers is a Fair-trade lodge is co-owned by the local traditional community and offers loads of cool activities and tours that are owned and run by members of the local community - so all your money goes where it is most needed.
