Sandy beaches draw many backpackers to Kei Mouth which also gains popularity by being the southern entry point to the Transkei Wild Coast.

With horse-riding, a 9-hole golf course, great hikes, bird-watching and surfing, Kei Mouth is a fabulous Wild Coast attraction for budget travellers. Kei Mouth is also home to the 'Pont', one of South Africa's two remaining car-transporting pontoon river ferry services. The Pont carries vehicles, passengers and livestock across the Great Kei on a daily basis and the trip is an unforgettable experience for any backpacker visiting the area.

To the North of Kei Mouth, is the ruggedly beautiful Wild Coast where one can follow in the footsteps of the shipwreck survivors, visit a local village, explore the hills on a mountain bike, canter along the beach on horseback or laze about in the calm waters of a secluded lagoon.
To the South, is the picturesque little village of Morgan Bay which boasts a mile long stretch of sandy beach, scenic cliffs and the idyllic Double Mouth Nature Reserve.

Canter across white sandy beaches and through stunning scenery of rural African on a Horse Trail along side the Indian Ocean with Wild Coast Horse Trails or embark on an African Horse Safari  where you will come face to face with giraffes, zebras and other non-dangerous game on horseback.

Backpackers visiting Kei Mouth can stay at Peas on Earth backpackers, just 30km outside of Kei Mouth, where you can enjoy the spectacular views and keep a look out for a passing giraffe…
